What to Expect
Individuals seeking detox or mental health services will complete a triage process which includes a risk assessment and nursing assessment to ensure medical stability prior to admission. The Crisis Stabilization Unit is a voluntary, unlocked facility. Individuals must be deemed to be medically stable, must be able to perform self-care activities independently (can move, eat, and use the bathroom without assistance), and be willing to participate in activities on the unit.
No individual seeking help at the CSU will ever receive a bill for accessing this service.
If an individual is not eligible for admission onto the unit, CSU staff will coordinate referrals or facilitate admission to a more appropriate level of care (such as a hospital), or will assist in the development of a safety plan. All treatment recommendations are made by a fully-qualified medical provider (MD/PA/APRN) following evaluation by our highly-trained nursing staff. Individuals below the age of 19 are not eligible for admission to the Crisis Stabilization Unit, however are able to complete the risk assessment process to receive treatment recommendations or referrals to appropriate services.
On the Unit
Once admitted, our CSU staff ensures a secure, supportive setting with typical length of 3 to 5 days for detox or symptom stabilization. Individuals seeking detox services may be encouraged to consider substance use treatment, such as short-term residential treatment or dual diagnosis treatment, outpatient counseling, community support, or other assistance to help them in their recovery journey. When residential treatment is desired, CSU staff are often able to provide transportation directly to treatment.
After initial detox or mental health symptoms have stabilized (typically 24-72 hours), individuals are expected to participate in structured programming throughout the day. Along with this, counseling and case management/peer support staff are available to help plan and support the continued recovery efforts of the individual.
Smoking is allowed at scheduled times while on the unit, and clients are responsible for providing their own cigarettes (which cannot be self-rolled). Cell phones are able to be brought to the unit, but clients will not have access to them unless supervised by a staff (such as to obtain a phone number). Rules regarding visitation and other activities will be explained prior to admission.
General Admission Criteria
- Medically stable.
- 19 years of age or older.
- Not actively suicidal.
- Willingness to ensure safety of self and others.
- Willingness to be admitted.
- Willingness to participate in daily programming.
- Willingness to complete own activities of daily living.
Mental Health Admission Criteria
- Past history of substance abuse.
- Current crisis or past diagnosis of a mental illness.
- History of taking mental health medications.
- Current or past mental health board commitment.
- Relapse after a period of sobriety.
- Unable to maintain sobriety.
- Resident of a halfway house or group home.
Detoxification Admission Criteria
- Blood alcohol content of .350 or below.
- No Opiate use.
- No Benzodiazepine abuse.
